When constructing the Ice-bar we have used the expertise of the chinese ice sculpturers. Preparations begin already in Desember, at this time the ice on the lake next to the snowhotel is thick enough to use for construction, about 20 centimeters. This ice continues to grow with 2 cm every day till it reaches about 70 centimeters thickness. We use about one week to cut all the ice we need. This ice is cut by chainsaw and towed into the snowhotel with snowmobiles, Here the sculpturers transform it to amazing pieces of art. Every year we use about 15 tonnes of ice for the hotel bar and rooms. The bar and the sculpures are different from year to year, It is always exciting to see what the artist find inside the ice.
Our icebar serves icecold Vodka in glasses made of ice. Welcome to the coolest bar in town!

The Alaskan husky is not a breed of dog, rather it is a type or a category. It is lacking international recognition as a breed of dog as there is no preferred type and no restriction as to ancestry; it is defined only by its purpose, which is that of a highly efficient sled dog. The Alaskan Husky is the sled dog of choice for world-class dog sled racing competition. They are very strong and enduring dog. The Alaska-husky comes from Alaska and northern Canada. Alaskan Huskies are often mixed with setters and retrievers. Alaskan Huskies are well adapted to the cold climate in northern Norway their best working conditions is at around -20 degrees Celsius. and still at -35 to -40 degrees they are able to do their job well, But at these temperatures us humans have to say enough is enough and trow in the towel. The Norwegian Dog racer Robert Sørlie won the Iditarod race twice (worlds longest dog sled race) with the help of Alaskan Huskies.

King Crab excursion
Join us when we go out on the frozen ocean to catch the delicius Red King Crab. And of course you get to taste the King Crab when we prepare it for lunch in the fishermans house. The red King Crab originally comes from the northern pacific ocean around the Kamchatka peninsula in Russia. It was introduced to the Barents sea in the sixties when Soviet scientist flew it in from east sibiria to Murmansk. From Murmansk it multiplied and spread east and west in the Barents sea. The idea of this project was to get more food in the norther region of Russia. The King Crab can get up to 1.8 metres from toe-to-toe and weigh up to 10 kilos. When first discovered in these waters it was considered a large treath to the environment because it spread so far, but today comercial fishing is doing its best to limit its population. Its white meat is very delicious and reach high prices on the international market. ca $100 USD or €70 Euro per kilogram is not uncommon. You will understand why when you get to taste some fresh king crab for the first time.
Our guide brings you out on the frozen ocean with snowmobile, you are passengers in his sledge. Here we pull up the crab pod to see how good todays catch was, Then we go back to the fisherman’s house where we get ready for the best seafood available, the red king crab.

Kirkenes had more than 300 bombing raids from Soviet airplanes, and more than 1000 times during the war years the Air raid alarms were sounded. This was because Kirkenes was one of the most strategic places in Europe during the war.
Visit Andersgrotta -Kirkenes largest bomb-shelter, built in 1943. Andersgrotta is constructed inside the bedrock in the centre of Kirkenes! We show a 9 min movie of unique archive-film explaining why Kirkenes was bombed and how life as a civilian was during the war.
