Once the stately home of Sir John and Lady Ellerman, distinguished shipping magnates and investors, Ellerman House sits perched on the slopes of Lion’s Head in the prestigious Bantry Bay residential area.
This elegant Cape Edwardian mansion is known for having one of the most spectacular ocean views in South Africa. Just ten minutes from the heart of Cape Town, the one-and-a-half acre property features a panorama of Atlantic coastline that includes the infamous Robben Island.
Now privately owned, Ellerman House stands as an iconic showcase of South Africa’s finest lodging, cuisine, wine, and leisure. With shaded verandas, tiered gardens, beautiful interiors, and a celebrated art collection, guests from all over the world love the combination of luxury and service this serene getaway offers.
Ellerman House has eleven rooms, two suites, and a private villa, with no two rooms alike. The property boasts two lounges, a library, two dining rooms, a spa, a main pool, gym, whisky bar, and expansive outdoor space. The property is not open to the public, offering a genuine level of privacy and luxury to guests.
Just a 10-minute drive to the V&A Waterfront, and a 5-minute walk to beautiful Clifton & Camps Bay beaches, Ellerman House is situated in the exclusive suburb of Bantry Bay.
Directly facing the Atlantic Ocean and Robben Island, the property has one of the most spectacular views in South Africa and is in close proximity to all popular tourist attractions.

Fine art is the soul of Ellerman House, and our collection sets us apart from other fine hotels in South Africa. This grand assortment of works has been assembled over three decades, and features a uniquely South African twist.
The originals span over a century, from the 1910 Volschenk of an undeveloped Camps Bay, to contemporary works from Vusi Khumalo. While Cape paintings were the original focus, the scope grew with the collection, and now encompasses an intriguing cross-section of genres representing a hundred years of South African culture. December 2009 marked the birth of Ellerman House Contemporary, a modern art gallery created to delight guests with the South African artists we love. Ever-evolving, the collection is rotated every season.
The Ellerman House cellar holds over 7,500 unique South African wines, sourced from established and emerging vineyards throughout the Western Cape.
Our sommelier, Manuel Cabello, is available to arrange private tastings and recommend dinner pairings. The selection is designed to encourage ‘verticals of vintages,’ whereby guests sample and compare different vintages of the same wine. By using the innovative ‘Le Verre de Vin’ preservation system in our cellar, we pour these exceptional wines at the perfect time – never compromising quality.
Fittingly, our list has been honoured with the Diners Club Wine List’s Diamond Award, the highest local accolade available.
The new wine cellar will be completed towards the end of the year. It will provide guests with an interactive wine library, and the chance to learn about and experience wines in a way they have never done before. What we do for South African Art through our collection of Masters and the Ellerman House Contemporary Gallery, we will be doing for South African Wine with this new wine cellar.
“Food, art and wine are the inspiration behind our hotel. My recipes reflect the soul of Ellerman; they belong nowhere else.”

Visitors to South Africa are charmed by the beauty of our landscape, the warmth of our people, and the depth of our culture. As South Africans, we have much to celebrate, and at Ellerman House, we want our guests to experience the best of what this country has to offer.
To create this experience, we planted an indigenous garden, serve South African wine and cuisine, and have a renowned collection of local art representing the best of past and present. We also employ a diverse staff that provides guests with the warmest in true South African hospitality.
To further our community contribution, we’ve committed ourselves to improving the lives of those less fortunate than us. Ellerman House has created ArtAngels, an annual fundraising art auction, hosted on site. All proceeds are channelled through the Click Foundation, our family foundation established in 2010. Funds raised each year are used by the partners of the Click Foundation to expand the reach of community pilot programs
Should you wish to be involved in helping us make a difference, the team at Ellerman House will be happy to assist you. Through your involvement and generosity, you will share in the joy, excitement and pride of being part of this exciting country, where we can all make a difference in forging a brighter future for South Africans.

THE CLICK FOUNDATION
The Click Foundation is an educational organisation set up as a response to the education crisis in South Africa. Their aim is to innovate and test non-conventional technology-based education solutions and programmes.
The first implementation project is a foundation phase English literacy programme called Reading Eggs. It’s an online phonetics-based programme that uses reading games, activities, songs, animations and rewards to create a fun and motivational learning experience. Reading Eggs allows for individualised, self-paced learning, requiring only basic facilitation.
For more information, visit the Click Foundation.
Ellerman House ArtAngels is a charity auction held in Cape Town each year for the benefit of the Click Foundation and their implementation partners. At each event there’s a limited auction of fine art pieces – kindly donated by some of South Africa’s leading artists – plus raffle draws, prizes, food, wine and music.
